Is Vaping safe: Current Vaping Facts you need to know about.

The facts of whether or not vaping is safe is still up for some debate, but numerous studies confirm that there are no significant short-term or long-term health hazards that can be linked to the use of e-cigarettes.

The overall public opinion is also slowly changing, but still there is misleading research and clickbait news headlines that are creating a perception that using e-cigarettes is not as safe as harm reduction advocates make it out to be.

Quitline NZ also known as The Quit Group is an incorporated charitable trust established in 1999. The Quit Group is committed to helping all New Zealanders quit smoking, with a particular focus on Māori, Pacific peoples and pregnant women.

Quitline have come out in support of e-cigarettes as an alternative to smoking and have included vaping as part of their Help to Quit guideline

What Does Science Have To Say About Vaping Safety?


The Quick Answer?

Vaping is relatively safe, at least in the short-term, which was confirmed by numerous studies in recent years. In fact, the Cochrane Library, a non-profit that looks at reliable studies, issued their E-cigarette Report in 2016, which concluded that there are no noticeable short-term adverse effects associated with vaping.

As for long-term health effects of vaping, we are now getting the results of the first studies designed to examine them. The findings of a recent 3.5 year-long study concluded that vaping is unlikely to cause a significant amount of damage to the human body – no damage to the lungs, heart, or other organs was found even in test subjects who heavily vaped.

Regardless of these positive results, a puzzle remains: are we really aiming for a 100% vaping safety? Is that even the right question we should be asking?

Quitline NZ & Vaping Safety?

Quitline state "The health risks associated with long-term use of e-cigarettes are unknown, but todays research on E-cigarettes show vaping to be 95% better for your health vs smoking cigarettes"

According to Quitline NZ they do not view using e-cigarettes the same as smoking. "Evidence has highlighted that e-cigarettes are up to 95% better for your health than smoking tobacco products and are considered a useful harm reduction tool. You are still considered smokefree if you are only using e-cigarettes and not smoking tobacco products"

The Importance of Placing Vaping Safety In the Right Context

Talking about vaping safety can feel pointless without the right benchmarks to go by. What we should all be interested in is whether or not vaping is safer vs smoking traditional tobacco cigarettes. I think I speak for most smokers transitioning to vaping that none of us would recommend vaping to a non-smoker so why take the question out of context in the first place?

Vaping is not without risk! The simple truth is inhaling anything other than air was not something our lungs were designed to do. But, does vaping kill? The research to date says no. There are many examples of random google searches that will result in the answers you are looking for. Lets all just trust in the science that is evolving and try to understand the true scientific facts we are provided to make our own informed decisions.
